Lasercutting at Open Design City

You may have noticed a strange looking device in the back corner of Open Design City these days – something resembling an oversized photocopy machine – and perhaps found yourself wondering when the next DIY time-travel workshop would be held. However, what you are seeing is, in fact, none other than a Helix laser cutter. Manufactured by US-based Epilog Laser, this piece of equipment will be available at ODC for one month. ODC manager Tom explains further.

So what does this laser-cutter do, exactly?

The laser-cutter can be used to cut a variety of materials – wood, cardboard, plastic – based on a digital design you can create on Photoshop or on Illustrator. The laser-cutter can also be used for engraving – t-shirts, business cards,

Who gave you this laser-cutter, and when?

The laser-cutter was presented to us by the anstiftung & ertomis foundation – an organisation dedicated to sustainable urban development and DIY culture. As part of their Offene Werkstätte (open workshops) network, ODC receives materials and equipment that circulates among similar workshops throughout Germany. We just received the laser-cutter this weekend, and will have it until the 3rd of March.

How can members use it?

Members of betahaus and ODC can use this laser-cutter for a variety of things – business cards and stencils would be two of the more practical uses for it. There are plenty of websites with pre-made laser-cutting patterns that allow you to create a wide variety of things.
Using the laser-cutter will cost members and non-members alike 5 Euros for every 10 minutes of cutting time.

Sounds interesting. We’d like to see this thing in action – is there a workshop coming up?

Yes. Our first workshop will be an introduction to laser-cutting, and will take place on Thursday, the 9th of February, from 19:00 to 21:00 (5 Euros for members, 15 Euros for non-members). Following that, we will be holding a more advanced laser-cutting workshop, which will take place from 14:00 to 20:00 on Saturday, the 18th of February (20 Euros for members, 60 Euros for non-members).

We will also be holding a workshop on the 27th of February, where we will be using the laser-cutter to make screen-printing stencils (5 Euros for members, 15 Euros for non-members). Additionally, members who already know how to use a laser-cutter are welcome to hold their own workshops, and pass their skills on to others – just contact me at tom@betahaus.de.

WORKSHOP: TEXT NETWORK ANALYSIS WITH GEPHI

In this workshop Dmitry Paranyushkin will demonstrate a novel method for text network analysis using Gephi graph visualization software.

Unlike other topic modelling methods (latent semantic network analysis, LDA) our approach takes into account the structural properties of text network in order to identify the clusters for meaning circulation and the most influential concepts within the text. You will learn how to create graph network representations of texts and perform their comparative quantitive and qualitative analysis. The method can be especially useful for quick text summarization and group sentiment profiling.

What It Can Be Used For:
– Identifying the most influential concepts and topics within a text.
– Comparing different texts together, especially what strategy a text uses to “push” a certain agenda.
– Group sentiment analysis: find the terms that unite any group together

– Quick text summary and overview (can be especially useful for studying or law text)

If you’d like to participate you can send us a short text (200 to 300 words) to info (at) noduslabs dot com describing your interests and current occupations. We will create text graphs both for participants and the whole group and see how they relate to one another (see the image attached). This may also be useful for you to meet other like-minded individuals at betahaus or find the people who could complement your cognitive map with their knowledge.

To sign upworkshopnoduslabs1.eventbrite.com

Date: 7th of December, Wednesday, 18.00 to 20.00
Place: betahaus, 19-20 Prinzessinnenstr (U8: Moritzplatz), 4th floor Arena hall

We highly recommend you to bring your laptop with you and pre-install Gephi graph visualization software on your computer (works on Mac, PC, Linux).

Enable Session XIII – New Deals, Future Money

Enable Berlin is a place where people meet to solve challenges together. Enable Berlin designs processes to enhance collective creativity, and share the results as an open-source initiative. Enable Berlin actively supports local creativity and provides sound concepts for their clients.

We would like to invite you to attend the next Enable Session XIII – New Deals, Future Money on December 1st, 7.30pm at betahaus, groundfloor at the Open Design City.

What is it all about? This is how Enable Berlin descripes it:

“As we are helplessly witnessing what may be the first steps towards the decline of our financial system, and along with it a complex set of morals and norms we hardly ever think – or dare – to question, next Enable Session will be doing just that.

We will be looking not at the system, but its medium. Money. It is symptomatic that most of this circulating in the world be virtual, being sold back before it’s even been paid for. The disconnection between citizens and their currency seems to be widening, as seems to prove every new anti-stock-market movement. Indignés, Wall Street occupiers, all of them are feeling confused and left aside by a financial system that ignores who it should be working for.

A few solutions already exist. Local and self-devaluating currencies have been introduced in various places of the world in the last 10 years. Microcredit has gained its place in the modern society. LETS allow citizens to exchange goods and services without using any monetary convention. Another interesting fact, internet banking will soon become the most popular payment system.

What do all those diverse, almost antinomic solutions lead to?

Participants to the next Enable Session will be challenged to see further than that, and to explore what other alternatives to money might be viable in the near future.”
